Comfort Zone: Why Step Out of It?
The comfort zone is a personal space where one feels secure, confident, and comfortable. Everything is familiar, predictable, and under control. In this space, a person can manage their behavior, estimate their efforts, and achieve expected results. However, when we desire more, the question of stepping out of the comfort zone inevitably arises.
Why is it so hard to step out?
Because subconsciously, we carry a fear of the new and the unknown, explains psychologist Natalia Vovk, director of the Tomalogy Center — a center for self-discovery and development.
“Even though the rational part of our mind understands there is nothing truly dangerous, and we are capable of and even desire more, the subconscious triggers anxiety and concern.
This is how our mind works — as soon as we move even five minutes into the future, let alone make long-term plans, the unknown enters our lives. This unpredictability fills the mind with assumptions and projections that we often perceive as reality,” explains Natalia.
In other words, without awareness, we cannot distinguish between what is real and what is imagined.
“If we tend to see the positive in things, we’re less likely to perceive danger. But if our mind leans toward negativity, we can become seriously scared — not for our lives necessarily, but for the integrity of our self-image. We fear failure, being exposed as incapable, or simply not living up to expectations. And yet, the desire for change doesn’t go away.”
This is when a person can fall into a trap of anxious overthinking — constantly preparing, promising themselves to try harder next time, but the higher the stakes, the deeper the doubt that efforts will make a difference.
Thus, the energy meant for action gets lost in overthinking.
“That’s why the comfort zone becomes a place of both painful inaction and an inability to change without a ‘magical push’ from life in the form of new challenges,” Natalia adds.
How to Step Out of the Comfort Zone? Learn to Embrace Life’s Challenges
“We must learn to accept life’s challenges. This signals that the old space is already well-known — everything has been learned there, and what’s left is mechanical repetition. Ahead lies something new, where we must move from incompetence to mastery, through learning and emotional turbulence. In this process, we gain inner resilience and learn to rely on ourselves through experience — not just in theory but in practice. This builds the foundation for future success,” the psychologist explains.
Don’t Scare or Rush Yourself
“Understand that starting something new takes time — to learn, acquire new skills, and build new connections. When a child first stands up, parents rejoice because it’s a promise that the child will soon walk, then run. We should show the same patience and encouragement to ourselves when learning something new.
Demanding immediate perfection only becomes an obstacle, not a motivator,” says Natalia.
Experience Emotional Turbulence Without Judgment
“When we start something new, or even just change our approach, things won’t go perfectly at first. Emotional reactions, even intense ones, are normal. Our psyche adapts to new conditions.
During this period, we must consciously process our emotions without rushing to conclusions like, ‘What kind of person am I?’ Give yourself time to adjust,” the psychologist advises.
Don’t Overload Yourself with Unrealistic Goals
“Often when we decide to pursue something new, we treat it as an ‘all or nothing’ gamble — like in a casino: ‘If I do this, I must win’ — in career, relationships, or opportunities. Such high stakes can make even simple steps feel overwhelming because we feel we have something to lose. But do we really?
Break your big goal into small, manageable steps,” Natalia recommends.
Most Importantly — Start. Real Action Brings Real Results
“Ask yourself: are you preparing to act, or are you already acting? Act from a place of understanding — that you need this, that you will learn and figure it out. Don’t act from a perfectionist mindset, where you demand one flawless step after years of preparation.
Real action brings the first real results. That’s how you know whether you’re headed in the right direction — and you can always adjust.
Become aware! And soon, you won’t even remember needing to convince yourself to leave your comfort zone,” says Natalia.
