The effect of color on appetite
Thanks to the internal signals of our body, we understand when there is a feeling of hunger, which plays an important role in the process of losing weight. However, the stimulation of this signal is affected not only by the body’s need for food, but also by the color of dishes and products. As it turned out, color has a powerful effect on the perception of food by our body. Scientists have found that one type of food causes different reactions in our body. It includes stimulation of salivation, and causes the excitation of the hormones responsible for appetite.
Red
According to a scientific study published in the “Appetite” magazine, people ate less food when served on a red plate. Scientists have suggested that red is often associated with danger, warning, or stop (stop signs come to mind). However, most other studies find the opposite result and show that red color actually stimulates appetite. In fact, people find red products the most attractive. Red color activates your appetite so much that restaurants often use it in its logos, on menus, on tablecloths and napkins.
Yellow
Yellow stimulates appetite because it is associated with happiness. When you see yellow, your brain releases more serotonin, the hormone of well-being. You may have noticed that in many restaurants, one may find yellow flowers on the table and the reason behind this is quite simple – this color makes you feel more optimistic. The more optimistic you feel, the greater the likelihood that you will spend more money on food. Like yellow, orange foods often cause a feeling of warmth and comfort.
Green
People tend to believe that all green foods are healthy, regardless of whether the food itself is truly nutritious. This may be due to eating habits of our ancestors. They often considered green foods safe and unlikely to be poisonous or fatal.
White
White foods are often associated with excessive consumption, especially when it comes to snacks. We tend to forget that white foods contain calories, and it leads to overeating. White foods and foods that are eaten from white dishes are also less healthy.
Appetite suppressing colors
Blue
Are there certain colors that control our appetite and help limit the amount of food consumed? Studies show that blue suppresses appetite because there are few natural products with a blue tint, except blueberries, gooseberries, eggplant and, possibly, bluish-purple potatoes. A long time ago, when our ancestors were looking for food sources, blue, black and purple signaled that food could be poisonous, and it was entirely possible that the habit of avoiding these colors in food was still embedded in the subconscious. Studies have shown that when foods were blue, people found them much less attractive, even if they were tasty.
Pink
Pink does not stimulate your appetite because it is less natural and often makes people think of raw meat or artificial preservatives.
Grey
Gray is another color that people consider unappetizing. Brown foods are also considered tendency to lower appetite because they are associated with spoiled foods.
