Scientists Have Named the Food of the Future
According to UN projections, by the end of the century the global population could exceed 11 billion people. In light of this, scientists are seriously concerned about the risk of a global food crisis.
British researchers from the Sainsbury Laboratory conducted a special study titled “Food of the Future,” predicting what people will eat in the years 2025, 2050, and 2169.
Experts believe that people need to reduce their consumption of meat and animal-based products for the sake of the environment, the planet, and the future of humanity as a whole.
According to scientists, the near future will see rapid development in the market for alternative protein sources. Products made from mushrooms, seaweed, and insects (such as cricket flour and seaweed-based milk) will become more popular, and new technologies will allow us to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs even in desert environments.
Although more than 50,000 edible plant species exist globally, humans currently rely mainly on just four crops: wheat, corn, rice, and soy.
Therefore, researchers suggest that in the future, people will begin to incorporate other plants into their diets, such as moringa, mombin, kedondong, and Bambara groundnuts.
Experts also predict that by 2050, instead of eating traditional seafood like salmon, tuna, and shrimp, people will consume jellyfish. Studies have shown that jellyfish are rich in vitamins and nutrients including magnesium, iron, and vitamin B12. Given their growing populations, harvesting jellyfish would not harm the ecosystem — unlike the overfishing of traditional seafood.
By the year 2169, cutting-edge technology will play a critical role in human nutrition. According to experts, people will be able to implant microchips that can determine which foods an individual needs to maintain optimal health.
