The Benefits of Walking: Why You Should Walk 10,000 Steps Every Day

Regular physical activity is one of the most important components of health. It has been repeatedly proven that engaging in sports is crucial for the body.

Due to certain circumstances or contraindications, not everyone has the opportunity to go jogging or work out at the gym regularly. Therefore, especially for those who lead a sedentary lifestyle, walking is an ideal option.

Fitness trackers, smartwatches, and mobile apps recommend walking 10,000 steps a day.

Why exactly 10,000? This number is based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO suggests walking 6,000 to 10,000 steps a day to maintain a minimum level of physical activity.

According to the classification of physical activity for a healthy person, less than 5,000 steps a day is considered a “sedentary” lifestyle.

Experts believe that 10,000 steps is the minimum that everyone should aim for daily.

This corresponds to 6-8 km (this figure is individual and depends on the length of your stride, height, and weight), and it takes about 30-40 minutes to achieve.

Scientific studies show that the number of steps isn’t as important as the duration and regularity of physical activity. It has been proven that the minimum amount of activity required to maintain a healthy lifestyle should be at least 30 minutes, 5-7 times a week.

Numerous studies have confirmed that people who walk 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day are less likely to develop obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

WHO recommends engaging in walking or other physical activities for 30 minutes in one session, five or more times a week, or at least 150 minutes a week. However, it is important to assess the capabilities of your own body.
