The Science of Happiness: Yale University Offers Its Most Popular Course for Free
Today, despite living in developed and relatively prosperous societies, a surprisingly low number of people report feeling truly happy. According to statistics, every second person in Europe and the U.S. suffers from depression or uncertainty about the future.
Psychologists emphasize that happiness largely depends on ourselves — it’s not rooted in the past or future — and, most importantly, the ability to be happy can be learned.
Yale University, one of the most prestigious private institutions in the United States, has made its most popular course, “The Science of Well-Being,” available for free online.
The course is hosted on the Coursera platform, where over 3 million people have already enrolled. Remarkably, this is the most popular course in Yale’s 317-year history, and it focuses on cultivating happiness in everyday life.
The course was created and is taught by Dr. Laurie Santos, professor of psychology at Yale.
Designed as a five-week program, it includes video lectures and practical exercises exploring topics such as positive psychology, common misconceptions about happiness, and how to identify what truly brings us joy and meaning.
A key feature of the course is its focus on practical applications. Students are encouraged to participate in weekly tasks that help build habits and skills for a happier and more fulfilling life.
“In this course, you’ll engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits. As preparation for these tasks, Dr. Laurie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and research that can help us change,” says the course description.
On a related note, the world’s first Museum of Happiness recently opened in Copenhagen, Denmark, underscoring the growing global interest in emotional well-being and mental health.
