How to avoid emotional burnout and start living a fulfilling life
Life requires 100% commitment from us. At home, at work, in your personal life. But in reality, so-called “productivity” hides behind exhaustion and emotional imbalance. And the pursuit of career opportunities ends in a hospital ward. How to stop the process of self-destruction and finally start living a full life from the candidate of medical sciences Alexei Bashkirtsev.

Alexey Bashkirtsev,
chief physician of the Edem Resort Medical & SPA complex,
Candidate of Medical Sciences, Academician of the European Academy of Natural Sciences,
Member of the Supervisory committee of SingularityU Kyiv University in the field of exponential medicine,
international expert in anti-age medicine
Alexey, can one avoid burnout?
To get rid of a problem, you need to realize it.
Emotional burnout is not an overnight illness. It builds up over time.
Some of the first researchers of the issue, Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North, define emotional burnout as a process that can take a long time. It consists of 12 stages:
12 steps to emotional burnout:
- Desire to prove your worth
- Increased labor intensity
- Neglecting your own needs
- Displacement, but not a resolution of conflict
- Interpretation of values / cynicism
- Non-recognition of encountered problems
- Separation from social contacts
- Noticeable changes in behavior
- Apathy
- Inner emptiness
- Depressed mood
- Complete exhaustion – emotional burnout, depression, search for happiness
So, we have identified the stages of emotional burnout. What is the next step?
First, set defined working hours. It doesn’t have to be a clear-cut formula. Time should be personalized. And it’s better to count not in hourly terms, but based on the level of performance. The same goes for free time. For example, we recommend that our guests of the Edem Resort Medical & SPA Health Recovery Center to choose the pace that is most comfortable for themselves, where active work alternates with rest. And this is absolutely possible.
Universal formula – rest two days a week. I am most impressed by four working days and three days of rest.
The main thing is an individual approach.
You can also use the rule of three eights: 8:00 sleep + 8:00 work + 8:00 rest = 24 hours, that is, a day.
For a modern person, you need to realize: first rest, and then “acceleration”. But in reality, unfortunately, the opposite is true – we first use our resource, actively work and give our best, and then we cannot wait for the weekend or vacation.
Performance is a trend now. Then why is it harmful to work hard?
Let’s analyze, in Ukraine 90% of company employees work overtime and stay late at work. Among them, head managers are in the first place, managers are in second, and line workers are in third.
In our minds there is a cocept substitution. After all, overtime is not an indicator of efficiency, as many might think. This is a fact that demonstrates that the team is no longer effective. And for the owner of the enterprise, this means that soon the employee will get sick, and everything will end either in his absence or in presenteeism- when a specialist comes to work sick.
So, overtime work ends with a breakdown and a decrease in efficiency.
Can we fight emotional burnout?
Of course, this can not only be cured, but also prevented. There are classic postulates to improve productivity. Among them:
- Mental health;
- Conducting a performance health audit, which will determine clear recommendations.
I would like to share a method that is a real trend in the modern world. Namely, the transition to personalized working conditions:
- After conducting a cut of values in the company, select comfortable working hours for each team member;
- Provide a comfortable environment;
- And again – health audit.
What health recovery programs can you recommend?
To fight emotional burnout, Edem Resort specialists and I have developed a “Performance” program for three or seven days.
The three-day program is designed to quickly restore strength that was spent on difficult and intense work. It fills the emotional side of life. We recommend it at the initial stages of emotional burnout and at the first manifestations of chronic fatigue syndrome.
The program is supervised by a psychotherapist with specially selected treatments that are combined in combination with IV therapy.
The 7-Day “Productivity” program is an advanced option. It is suitable for guests who are at the stage of professional burnout, chronic fatigue syndrome, apathy caused by emotional overload. The program takes place under the supervision of a doctor, identifying and eliminating possible “malfunctions” in the body, disguised as a state of chronic fatigue.
The guest receives motivational and consulting support from a psychotherapist, which, in combination with physiotherapeutic methods of medicine, gives a 100% result of an increase in productivity.
Therefore, remember, re-energizing is not a vacation, but a direct investment in your productivity and longevity.
