What is Social Intelligence and How to Develop It
Social intelligence is a set of abilities and skills that determine the success of social interactions.
The term “social intelligence” (SI) to describe the ability to succeed in interpersonal situations, behave wisely, and appropriately according to the context was introduced by Edward Thorndike in the early 20th century.
Social intelligence overlaps with sociability. Often, SI is considered a personality trait that underpins success in interpersonal relationships.
In a broad sense, social intelligence comprises skills that help people interact with others and navigate social situations effectively.
These abilities include understanding another person’s behavior, understanding one’s own behavior, and the capacity to act appropriately according to the situation.
Today, to be successful and in demand, having only professional skills, knowledge, and expertise in a particular field is no longer enough.
Social connections are at least as important—and in some professions much more important—than hard skills or even emotional intelligence (the ability to recognize emotions).
Therefore, it is crucial to develop social communication skills—this is important both in everyday life and at work. These include the ability to communicate in a team, find common ground with people of different ages, experience levels, and personalities; the ability to explain complex ideas simply and clearly convey your thoughts to colleagues and clients.
How to Develop Social Intelligence
Social cognitive functions involve gathering information, interpreting it, and forming a response to the intentions, opinions, and behaviors of others.
Experts recommend observing other people to develop social intelligence. This includes watching those whom you consider to have well-developed social intelligence, as well as paying close attention to your conversation partners.
In addition, experts suggest working on emotional intelligence. For example, you can observe your own emotions and how they influence your communication with others.
