5 reasons to start keeping a diary: psychologist's advice

Keeping a diary as a tool of introspection and self-examination is one of the most useful habits that should be developed. This is one way to change your life for the better.

Keeping daily notes helps to structure and clearly articulate thoughts, which in turn trains the brain. And the habit of recording your feelings and emotions will provide an opportunity not only to realize them, but also teach you to be honest with yourself and help to set up an internal dialogue. This practice will teach you to analyze situations and lead to conclusions that are sometimes not obvious at first glance.

Psychologists say that a personal diary has a huge therapeutic effect, especially if you keep records by hand, and not in electronic form.

To get started, just try to record all the good that happened to you in one day, and you will see how much wonderful is happening in your life. This will help fight bad mood, stress and even depression. But do not focus on the negative, try switching to positive thinking. Thank the people around: for happy moments or for the life lessons that you have received thanks to them.

The psychologist and psychotherapist in the method of positive and transcultural psychotherapy Tatyana Pechalova specifically for VITAGURU talked about why it is useful to keep a diary.

“Keeping a diary helps verbalize internal fears, see and understand what is really happening in our lives. And what is verbalized can be controlled. Use the simplest pattern of observing yourself: write down your actions during the day, note feelings, thoughts you have” the psychologist says.

5 good reasons to start keeping a diary:

  1. Verbalization of thoughts and feelings. When we transfer our thoughts to paper, describe our feelings, we have the opportunity to better understand ourselves, and therefore manage our condition.
  2. By fixing our experiences in a diary, it is easier for us to separate ourselves from these experiences and look at ourselves or the situation from the side.
  3. Regularly keeping a diary for a long time, in the literal sense, allows you to “return to the past” and relive certain events, feelings.
  4. Diary is a very effective tool for self-study. It helps to see certain connections and patterns in our behavior, reactions and feelings.
  5. A diary is the ability to show your creativity. It is a mistake to believe that the diary is only suitable for those who have something to say, whose life is eventful. The truth is that absolutely each of us has something to say, and this is accessible to each of us, in contrast to music or drawing, for example.
