Meditation Courses in Schools: Benefits for Children

Today, the practice of meditation is being actively introduced in schools across the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2007, as part of an experimental program, Visitacion Valley Middle School in San Francisco (USA) launched the “Quiet Time” initiative—a pilot project integrating meditation into the school curriculum.

As part of this program, students were taught deep breathing techniques and basic meditation. During the quiet time sessions, they were offered several options: read a book, take a short nap, or meditate. Interestingly, about 90% of students chose meditation, practicing it for 15 minutes twice a day.

The results of the experiment were so positive that “Quiet Time” was recognized as one of the most successful innovations in recent years.

Psychologists observed that meditation significantly improved students’ emotional self-regulation and reduced anxiety levels. Tests showed notable reductions in fatigue, irritability, and anger. Academic performance also improved—English grades increased by 36.8%, and math scores rose by 40.7%. Additionally, school attendance improved significantly, with absences dropping from 28% to just 4% compared to other schools.

Teachers also reported positive changes. They noted that meditation helped enhance their emotional well-being, boosting self-control and resilience to stress.

Not everyone welcomed the initiative. Some critics argued that meditation is a religious practice and could influence children’s beliefs or even lead them to change their religious affiliation. For instance, in Ohio, the program was discontinued following complaints from parents. However, Congressman Tim Ryan publicly supported the idea of introducing meditation in schools.

“This basic technique is used by police officers, Air Force pilots, and athletes. You don’t need to change any of your beliefs or join a church to practice meditation. You know, I’m still a Catholic,” said the congressman.

Today, meditation in American schools is only conducted with the consent of both students and their parents. For younger children, meditation sessions are designed in the form of playful activities focused on deep breathing and simple breathing exercises practiced in silence.
