How to Maintain Work–Life Balance
Much has been written about work-life balance as the key to a happy and harmonious life. But according to psychologist and psychotherapist Tatiana Pechalova, there is no universal formula for achieving balance across all areas of life.
“It’s a mistake to think there’s one-size-fits-all advice. Balance is personal for everyone,” she says.
We unconsciously strive for balance to survive—by adapting to our environment. When we’re cold, we put on warm clothes. When hungry, we eat. These physical imbalances are easy to notice. But imbalances in our work, personal lives, and relationships often go unnoticed until they become a real problem.
One helpful tool is the “Wheel of Life” exercise.
Draw a circle divided into key life segments: family, relationships, career, personal growth, travel, finances, etc. Rate each area from 1 to 10. Low scores are closer to the center, high scores toward the edge.
This visual helps assess how balanced your life feels.
“Balance isn’t about giving equal attention to all areas,” explains Pechalova. “It’s about feeling satisfied with your current level of engagement.”
If something feels “off,” it’s a signal of imbalance. Instead of seeking a perfect formula, explore your feelings and define your own path to balance.
Practical tips to find your balance:
-
Accept that perfect balance doesn’t exist.
Balance is dynamic—it shifts daily. Today might be great for productivity, tomorrow for rest. You don’t need to focus on every area every day. -
Set boundaries.
Disbalance often appears where boundaries blur. Know where your personal life ends and work begins. Define your social, family, and work limits. -
Be realistic about your resources.
Don’t compare your life to social media perfection. You have your own pace and energy. Focus on what works for you, not others. -
Spend time alone.
Whatever your version of balance looks like, make room for yourself. Don’t skip rest, hobbies, vacations, or time with loved ones. These are essential for recharging and maintaining balance.
