What is Zero Waste and Conscious Consumption
Zero Waste is a lifestyle focused on minimizing our environmental impact by reducing the amount of waste we produce. At its core lies conscious consumption — buying less, buying smarter, and avoiding unnecessary waste.
The Zero Waste philosophy applies to all areas of life and is based on five main principles:
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot.
The 5 Core Principles of Zero Waste
-
Refuse
Say no to unnecessary items: plastic bags, free samples, flyers, or things you don’t actually need. Make shopping lists and resist impulsive buys or sales tricks. -
Reduce
Cut down on what you do need. Don’t buy more clothes or gadgets than you actually use. Less consumption = less waste. -
Reuse
Replace disposables with reusables: tote bags, cloth napkins, rechargeable batteries. Donate clothes and items you no longer use instead of throwing them away. -
Recycle
Recycle what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse. This includes plastics, glass, metal, paper, textiles. Hazardous waste like batteries and electronics should be disposed of properly at designated centers. -
Rot (Compost)
Turn food scraps into compost. Compost vegetable peels, fruit skins, coffee grounds, eggshells. Avoid composting meat, bones, oils, dairy, or liquids.
